Glazed ceramic roller vase by Gustave Reynaud, Le Mûrier in Vallauris

A glazed ceramic roller vase made by Gustave Reynaud , a leading figure in Vallauris ceramics, at the Le Mûrier workshop. This piece from the 1950s perfectly illustrates the post-war revival of Vallauris ceramics.

The vase has a cylindrical, or "roll," shape , decorated with stylized plant motifs painted with slip, enhanced with a nuanced matte glaze in shades of cream, celadon green, brown, and copper red. The rhythmic, graphic, and refined decoration is characteristic of the formal vocabulary developed by Gustave Reynaud in the 1950s.
The base is signed with the painted monogram “GR” , a characteristic signature of the workshop.

Gustave Reynaud (1915–1972) and Micheline Reynaud were a couple of ceramists in Vallauris. In 1955, under the impetus and advice of his brother-in-law, the ceramist Jean Derval , Gustave Reynaud settled in Vallauris, in a context of strong growth in ceramics, especially after the arrival of Picasso at Madoura in 1948.

The couple then founded the Le Mûrier workshop (1955–1982), named after the neighborhood where it was located. Jean Derval initially assisted Gustave and Micheline in their research into enameling and decoration. Subsequently, the workshop collaborated with several turners and decorators, developing a handcrafted production renowned for its quality, focused on tableware and interior decoration .

The Mulberry style is distinguished by stylized floral, animal (often bird) or abstract decorations , engraved or melted under enamel, as well as a palette dominated by copper red and cobalt blue , generally on a creamy background.
Before 1972, the mulberry leaf was the workshop's emblematic signature. After Gustave Reynaud's death, Micheline Reynaud continued the utilitarian production alone until the workshop's final closure in 1982.
