This vase comes from Awaji Island, famous for its fine pottery, and dates from the Meiji period (1868–1912). The contrast between the smooth, dark ceramic surface and the dynamic bamboo weave is a testament to refined Japanese craftsmanship.
The braiding is done by hand, with a pattern of crosshatch and decorative knots around the body, neck, and base of the vase, highlighting its curves. This type of decoration served both aesthetic purposes and to protect the ceramic, while also illustrating the harmonious union of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship.
