Glazed stoneware vase made by Michel Lanos (1926-2005) , a French potter and ceramist whose artistic journey led him from Biot to Paris, and then to the creation of his own workshops. Trained in Biot , a major center of Mediterranean pottery, he learned wheel throwing and firing there, and notably crossed paths with Fernand Léger and Roland Brice .
In the 1960s, he worked as a potter in various Parisian workshops, including those of Marcel Guillot and Mado Jolain , and later in Brittany for the production of Jean Cocteau 's ceramics. These experiences fostered a freer vision of the ceramic arts.
Having set up his own workshop in 1970, he developed a marked taste for high-temperature glazes , experimenting in particular with black, iron blue, and copper red. From 1976 onwards in Fontenay-sous-Bois, he created a more sculptural body of work, influenced by the spirit of the COBRA group, alongside independent potters such as Michel Gardelle, Brigitte Pénicaud, Claude Varlan, and Jacky Coville .
This vase from the 1980s perfectly illustrates his mastery of glazed stoneware: a rounded and balanced form, with a nuanced blue glaze flowing over a denser dark brown base. The subtle variations and textural effects reflect his experimentation with oxides and firing techniques.
Piece signed under the base “M. Lanos” .
