Very good overall condition. Minor wear and irregularities in the glaze inherent to the handcrafted work and firing process. Beautiful original patina.

Enamelled ceramic vase made by Olivier Petit , a leading figure in French ceramics of the 1950s. This vase has a baluster shape highlighted by a deeply incised geometric decoration, structured in horizontal registers alternating concentric circles, linear patterns and crosshatching.
The glaze, with its olive green, brown, and ochre hues, reveals beautiful variations in firing, highlighting the texture of the clay and the relief of the decoration. The overall effect is a style that is both archaic and modernist, characteristic of post-war French workshop ceramics.
The background bears the incised monogram of Olivier Petit.

About the artist
Born in Paris in 1918, Olivier Petit was both a ceramist and a sculptor. Trained in sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris after the Second World War, he began working with ceramics as a self-taught artist in the late 1940s. His work is distinguished by the use of red clays, incised decoration, and a highly sculptural approach to form. Close to the Parisian art scene and major ceramists such as Roger Capron and Jacques Blin, he actively participated in the revival of French ceramics. Receiving numerous awards in the 1950s and 1960s, he developed a poetic and humanist body of work until his untimely death in 1979.
