WMF Ikora silver-plated metal vase, dating from the 1930s , in the German Art Deco style .
This model features an ovoid shape resting on a circular pedestal, with a hammered and patinated surface, enhanced with abstract engraved decorations characteristic of the Ikora line.

The Ikora collection, developed by WMF from the mid-1920s, features nuanced metallic finishes and surface effects achieved through innovative chemical and mechanical processes. These pieces straddle the line between fine craftsmanship and industrial design.

History of WMF

Founded in 1880 in Germany under the name Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) , the WMF company resulted from the merger of Straub & Sohn and Ritter & Co. It quickly established itself as one of the largest European players in metal art and tableware.

From the late 19th century, WMF innovated by developing high-resistance silver plating techniques, as well as by integrating glass and decorative sculpture into its production. By the early 20th century, the factory employed several thousand workers and distributed its creations internationally.

From 1905 onwards, WMF fully embraced the Art Nouveau and then Art Deco movements. In 1925 , the creation of the Neue Kunstgewerbliche Abteilung (NKA) marked a turning point towards more artistic production, giving rise to finishes like Ikora , now considered major references of German industrial design of the 1930s.
