Art Deco blown glass vase from the 1920s by Marcel Goupy (1886-1954) , French master glassmaker and figure of Parisian decorative arts during the interwar period.
A versatile artist, Goupy began as a watercolor painter before turning to ceramics and glass. A graduate of the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs, he met the gallery owner Géo Rouard in 1909, a pivotal encounter that launched his career. Initially creating decorations and designs for glassware, he saw his first enameled pieces appear in 1914.
In 1919, he became head decorator of the Rouard gallery, then artistic director in 1929, a position he held until his death in 1954. His work was situated within a prestigious context: the Cristallerie de la Paix and the workshop on rue Vieille-du-Temple showcased the works of major artists such as Lalique, Marinot, Thuret, Navarre, Decorchemont, Dunand, Delaherche, and Mayodon . Goupy's creations were displayed alongside these emblematic names of the decorative avant-garde.
His abundant production is distinguished by sprayed enamels , opaque or translucent, often highlighted with a black line , as well as by plant decorations and stylized female silhouettes.
This vase has an ovoid shape with beautiful balance , a thick foot, and a subtle gradient of blues with a mottled decoration, typical of Goupy's work. The neck is enhanced with a black line applied while hot. The signature "M. Goupy" is engraved under the base.
