Art Deco glazed stoneware vase signed Lucien Brisdoux , a leading figure in early 20th-century French ceramics. Heir to a line of potters, Lucien Brisdoux (1878-1963) took over the factory founded by his father, Achille, in Bonny-sur-Loire (Loiret) in 1905. In 1918, he acquired "La Poterie Neuve" in Saint-Amand and established his own workshop there, where he worked notably with Fernand Laurent (1885-1946).
He dedicated his career to decorative stoneware , conducting extensive research on clays, metallic oxides, and glazes. His work with metallic glazes—gold or platinum—is particularly renowned, with pouring effects achieved by spraying creosote onto ceramic gold. This technique, briefly revived by Raoul Lachenal in 1924–1925, strongly influenced the identity of his workshop before being abandoned in 1940 for economic reasons. Brisdoux sold his workshop in 1956.
This vase from the 1930s perfectly illustrates the ceramist's technical mastery: architectural form, sandblasted surface, alternating turned rings, and a central band enhanced with gilding. The base bears the handwritten signature Brisdoux and the number 989 .
