Art Deco vase in Desvres earthenware , made in the 1920s by the ceramist Henri Delcourt (1872-1963) , active at the La Madeleine factory in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Its domed shape is decorated with a black floral design , particularly representative of the graphic style of the period.
The history of Desvres earthenware begins in the mid-18th century with the Boulongne family, specializing in tiles, before being continued by the Level family and then by Georges “Géo” Martel from 1900 onwards. At the same time, the Fourmaintraux dynasty developed several factories. In 1903, Jules Verlingue , in partnership with Mr. Lagarde, founded the La Madeleine earthenware factory in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
In 1918 , Verlingue sold the business to Henri Delcourt , a banker and doctor of law, who ran the factory until 1932. He produced earthenware in a distinctly Art Deco style , directly inspired by Verlingue's method. The factory ceased operations in 1935 .
The vase features an old crackle in the enamel , typical of these productions, with a beautiful harmony of black decoration on an ivory background.
