Decorative glazed ceramic dish, signed Lachenal . Made around 1880, it features a reserved decoration of a stylized green tiger surrounded by blue foliage on a bright yellow background. This motif clearly evokes the Asian and Japanese influences that were very fashionable at the end of the 19th century.
Edmond Lachenal (1855-1948), a major figure in French Art Nouveau ceramics, distinguished himself through his research on glazes and his collaborations with numerous artists. He was one of the great innovators of French ceramics.
Trained in Théodore Deck's workshop, he developed a personal aesthetic very early on, combining technical innovation and decorative boldness. His research on enamels, his collaborations with artists such as Hector Guimard and Eugène Grasset, as well as his role as an educator for a new generation of ceramists, make him an essential figure in the decorative arts in France.
