Art Deco earthenware plate from Desvres , made in the 1920s by Henri Delcourt (1872-1963) , at the La Madeleine factory in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
This hexagonal dish features a stylized polychrome central decoration , blending yellow, turquoise, green, and pink on a deep brown background, with a play of drips and vitrified shades on the rim. The overall effect is a bold graphic composition, typical of the Art Deco vocabulary and the chromatic explorations of Desvres earthenware in the early 20th century.
Desvres earthenware originated in the mid- 18th century before experiencing a revival at the turn of the 20th century. In 1903 , Jules Verlingue , in partnership with Mr. Lagarde, founded the La Madeleine earthenware factory in Boulogne-sur-Mer. This factory was taken over in 1918 by Henri Delcourt , who, until 1932, developed a production strongly influenced by Art Deco aesthetics , continuing Verlingue's expertise. The factory ceased operations permanently in 1935 .
