Small pewter pitcher with dark patina, dating from the late 19th century, decorated in high relief with a mythological design inspired by the works of the sculptor Clodion (Claude Michel, 1738-1814).
The piece depicts a circle of entwined satyrs and bacchantes, in a neo-rococo style characteristic of Clodion's rediscovery at the end of the 19th century. The handle evokes a naturalistic branch, while the body is richly worked with bunches of grapes and foliage.
“Clodion” signature in relief on the body and “Guaranteed Pure Pewter” inscription on the reverse.
A fine example of decorative sculpture inspired by Bacchic mythology and the romantic taste for Antiquity.
