Glazed ceramic pitcher by Charles Voltz , a ceramist active in Vallauris in the 1950s–1960s. The pitcher has a compact and balanced shape, characteristic of post-war Vallauris utilitarian production, with an abstract decoration applied to a deep black background.
Born in 1923 , Charles Voltz began his career as an industrial draftsman in Paris before settling in Vallauris in 1950 , where he trained in pottery under Robert Picault . He then opened his own workshop and developed a production primarily focused on tableware and lighting . His work is characterized by abstract and geometric designs, often engraved into the clay, a distinctive hallmark of his style. In 1958 , he filed a patent for a ceramic decoration process.
Deeply involved in the local art scene, Charles Voltz was a member of AVEC (Association Vallaurienne d'Expansion Céramique) for several years. His workshop also hosted young ceramists, including Albert Thiry and Alain Rufas .
This pitcher is signed under the base “C. Voltz – Vallauris” , a handwritten signature under the enamel. It can be used as a utilitarian object or repurposed as a vase or decorative piece.
