A quarter of a silver écu bearing the name of Henry IV , minted at the end of the 16th century and later mounted as a brooch , a piece somewhere between numismatics and historical jewelry. This coin pays homage to Henry IV , known as Good King Henry .
Promulgated in April 1598 , the Edict of Nantes marked a major milestone in French history by granting civil, political, economic and religious rights to Protestants, putting an end to the Wars of Religion that had been tearing the kingdom apart since 1562. This quarter of an ecu is part of this fundamental historical context.
The denomination ¼ of an Ecu corresponds to a quarter of a gold Ecu , symbolized on the coin by the numbers II and II (i.e. 4 ), visible on either side of the Ecu.
Struck in different workshops of the kingdom , this type shows slight variations depending on the place of minting.
The antique brooch mounting transforms this coin into a unique historical jewel , to be worn or kept as a collector's item.
