A 1930s Art Deco brooch, crafted in 800 silver and signed by René Delavan , a French designer of the interwar period. This piece features a form that is both geometric and organic , typical of the Art Deco style. The hand-hammered work creates a beautiful relief, texture, and subtle plays of light. The stylized form, reminiscent of a leaf or an abstract motif, clearly demonstrates the pursuit of movement and simplification characteristic of this period.
Born in 1896 , René Delavan is one of the renowned French designers of Art Deco, alongside figures such as Jean Després and L. Guilbaud . Active in Paris from the early 1920s, he developed a highly personal style in his workshops based on metal sculpture and hand-hammering. He achieved considerable success with his creations in silverware and pewter art—tea and coffee services, trays, vases, and boxes.
At the same time, Delavan also created modernist jewelry in silver or pewter, including brooches, pendants, and earrings, often adorned with stylized plant motifs or abstract forms. His jewelry, signed “R. Delavan,” “RD,” or DELAVAN , are fine examples of French Art Deco jewelry. He remained active until his death in 1958 .
The reverse of this brooch bears the DELAVAN signature as well as the boar hallmark , guaranteeing 800 silver.
