Léa Stein (born in Paris in 1931) is a major French designer of 20th-century costume jewelry. In the late 1950s, she founded her own design house and achieved initial success with her buttons made of rhodoid , a high-quality plastic based on cellulose acetate. In 1969, she devoted herself entirely to jewelry design.
With her husband Fernando Steinberg , who developed a unique process for layering painted rhodoid sheets, Léa Stein created a polychrome material with varied textures and colors, sometimes enriched with textile or metallic inclusions. Her creations from the 1970s—bracelets, rings, earrings, and especially brooches—explore a playful and narrative universe of animals, figures, and symbols. Long kept secret outside of France, her work now enjoys international recognition and is highly sought after by collectors of vintage jewelry.
