Pyrite-glazed stoneware plate made by Claude Champy (born in 1944), a leading figure in contemporary French ceramics and one of the few internationally recognized artists. This piece, dating from the 1980s–2000s, features a mottled green-grey glaze punctuated with pyrite inclusions and rust-brown hues, characteristic of his research into reactions to fire and high temperatures.
Trained at the École des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art in Paris in the 1960s, Champy developed early on a profound sensitivity to the material, the cracks, the tears, and the textures of chamotte clay. After formative encounters in La Borne (Mohy, Joulia, Linard, Lerat, etc.), he founded his workshop in 1973 in Plaisir (Yvelines) , where he still lives and works today. His work, exhibited worldwide since the late 1970s, has entered numerous public collections, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Cité de la Céramique in Sèvres.
The plate shown here perfectly illustrates his artistic vocabulary: raw materials, fire effects, a limited yet expressive palette, and mineral depth. Signature incised under the base: "Champy"
