Red glazed ceramic plate made by Robert Picault in Vallauris , dating from the 1950s . This piece features a deep and brilliant red, reflecting the modernist aesthetic that Picault developed after founding his workshop in 1948. The signature RP appears under the base.
Robert Picault (1919-2000) , a former student of the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, settled in Vallauris in 1946 where he co-founded the Callis workshop with Roger Capron, soon joined by Jean Derval. Their production contributed to a major revival of Vallauris pottery. Surrounded by André Baud, the Quatre Potiers (Four Potters), and the Madoura workshop, Picault associated with Picasso (1949-1955), as well as Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Aragon, and Elsa Triolet.
In 1948, he created his own workshop, where he modernized traditional culinary ceramics , reinventing the forms and decorations: monochrome enamels, stylized geometric patterns, birds, fish, plants… With this identifiable style — simple lines, copper and iron oxides, early use of blue from 1955 — Picault imposed an aesthetic that would endure.
Its slogan: "From the kitchen to the table" . In the 1950s, its workshop employed up to 25 people and distributed its products in major French and European stores.
This red plate, rare in his monochrome range, is a fine example of his post-war work.
