Important glazed stoneware vase with handles, made around 1920 by Eugène Lion for the Primavera workshop, attached to the Printemps department stores in Paris.
Born into a family of potters active since the 18th century, Eugène Lion (1867–1945) trained in the family workshop in Puisaye, under the direct tutelage of Jean Carriès. He developed a personal ceramic style blending the tradition of French stoneware, mastery of the potter's wheel, and Far Eastern influences, a style very much in vogue at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. From the 1920s onward, he distinguished himself particularly through his research on glazes, including the famous copper red that would bring him renown.
This vase perfectly embodies this aesthetic: a globular body, a fluted cylindrical neck, and four vertical handles, directly inspired by the forms of ancient Asian ceramics. The nuanced brown glaze, with its deliberate and deep drips, testifies to a free yet controlled decorative approach.
Founded in 1912 under the impetus of René Guilleré, Primavera became one of the most important art workshops for Parisian department stores, alongside La Maîtrise and Pomone. Its ambition was to disseminate modern decorative art of high artisanal quality, in collaboration with renowned artists and ceramicists. The vase presented here is fully in keeping with this dynamic, that of the renewal of French decorative arts between the two World Wars.
