This exquisite antique solid 800 silver vesta case is a remarkable example of Art Nouveau design. Dated 1906, it bears an endearing hand-engraved dedication on the back: “1906 – pour ta fête ta femme – Françoise à Edouard” ("For your name day, from your wife – Françoise to Edouard").
Its front and back are richly decorated in high relief with swirling floral motifs, possibly inspired by thistle or poppy flowers – iconic forms of the Art Nouveau era. The level of detail in the chased silverwork is absolutely superb.
The case is made of 800 silver (hallmarked inside the lid with German marks and “800”) and includes a suspension ring for wearing as a pendant or attaching to a watch chain. The hinged lid opens and closes securely, and the original striker is intact.
