Crystal and blue overlay glass perfume bottle, hallmarked silver stopper - 19th century
A delightful antique perfume bottle dating from the late 19th century, made of clear cut crystal enhanced with a cobalt blue overlay glass decoration. The intricate and elegant cutting work evokes the productions of the Baccarat or Saint-Louis crystal works of the same era. The striking contrast between the transparency of the crystal and the depth of the blue is magnified by the play of light.
The bottle is topped with a silver screw cap, hallmarked with the diamond of a French master goldsmith, confirming its period manufacture and authenticity. The sculpted and ribbed decoration of the glass, with its twisted and organic shapes, is fully in keeping with the eclectic taste of the late 19th century, at the crossroads of Art Nouveau aesthetics.
This type of small, refined bottle was intended to contain concentrated perfumes or precious essences. It could also be used as a flask for aromatic salts (smelling salts), very popular in the 19th century to relieve discomfort. The screw cap ensured a perfect seal, making the bottle portable in a toiletry bag or handbag.
